This is our families favorite pizza dough recipe, it comes from a children's book! I made some minor changes to the recipe and after a lot of trial and error, perfected the baking process.
Ingredients:
1.5 cup of warm water
1 package of dry active yeast (not the quick kind)
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup olive oil
4-4.5 cups all purpose flour
Directions:
In the bowl of a stand mixer, add the warm water. The water should be between 100-110 degrees. Add the yeast and sugar. Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes. It should look foamy or slightly bubbly.
When the yeast mixture is ready, dump 4 cups of flour and 1 teaspoon of salt. Start mixing in the stand mixer and drizzle the olive oil in. Continue to mix until the dough comes together. This usually takes 2-5 minutes. If the dough is sticky, add flour about 1 teaspoon at a time. The dough should be tacky, not sticky.
Lightly grease a large bowl, transfer the dough and flip it around so the oil coats the dough. Cover and let rise for 2 hours.
When the dough has doubled in size, punch it down. Knead on floured surface and divide. I usually make 3 pizzas with one batch of dough. Roll it out and place on a pizza pan or cookie sheet.
Bake at 500 degrees for 5-6 minutes. Half way through, check for air bubbles and poke them with a knife. Remove from oven and turn down to 425 degrees.
Add your toppings and bake directly on the oven rack for an additional 10-12 minutes.
